If you don’t normally use a bike light and find yourself often stuck trying to make it home before the sun sets, or you’re terrified to ride your bike in the early morning when the fog is thick, read on to learn the importance of using a bike light during low light conditions, and find out whether or not using a bike light is a law in your state.

Bike Safety

Almost every cyclist has had at least one close call out on the road, and some aren’t so lucky. The number one reason cyclists are hit by drivers at night is their low visibility. Basically, cyclists who ride at night without safety likes are completely invisible to traffic, pedestrians and other cyclists.

While a cyclist can rely on their ability to spot cars first and move out of the way, there will definitely come a time when their lack of visibility will lead to a minor or major accident.

Bike lights work to dramatically increase the odds that oncoming cars, pedestrians, other cyclists can see you. Proper lighting will also adequately light up the terrain, so you’ll be able to clearly see dips, bumps, and potholes in the road, which can also reduce your risk of an accident.

That’s not to say that using a bike light will make getting hit by a car impossible, but lights can make a huge difference in terms of cycling safety and can significantly reduce your chances of an accident by more than sixty percent.

Bike Light Laws

These days, most states require cyclists to use both passive and active lighting.

When you hear the words “bicycle lights” you’re probably thinking of active lighting. This type of light requires you to switch it on in order to activate it. Basically, active lighting involves a light that’s powered by electricity.

Passive lighting is a type of lighting that doesn’t require the cyclist to turn it on.  It typically consists of reflective material and reflectors. Passive lighting works when a light source is directed at it. Passive lighting is used more as a failsafe, so, in the event your bike light battery dies, you’ll have bike reflectors as a backup.

In states where bike lights are required, it’s not legal to ride with just reflectors, so this type of failsafe is only useful when your battery powered light dies unexpectedly. Bike reflectors are required on all bikes sold in the United States.

When riding in limited visibility conditions, most states require the cyclist to use at least one battery powered light.

But even if it isn’t the law in your state, equipping your bike with the proper safety light setup is crucial if you want to remain safe on the road after dark.

In most states, in limited visibility conditions which means early morning, night, or during foggy weather, the cyclist must have a light attached that shows a light visibility of five hundred feet in the front of the bike. The light can be attached to either the cyclist or the bike, but the light must provide the minimum five hundred feet of illumination.
